Protecting your presents and precious possessions at Christmas

The most wonderful time of the year can come with expensive trinkets out on display or luxurious gifts boxed up and ready for the festivities. From antique Christmas decorations to the latest must have gadgets and jewellery beautifully wrapped under the tree, the total value of all items in your home will likely peak between Christmas and the new year.

You may also have more visitors than normal, upping the chances of damage happening – be that a glass of mulled wine spilt on your cream rug by a merry relative, or a vase knocked over by a child hiding around a corner hoping to sneak a peek at a certain someone; the more people, the higher the chance of damage. Do you know that not all home insurance policies cover accidental damage? It is worth checking if your policy gives this cover to help safeguard against a clumsy guest or unfortunate accident.

There is always a lot to think about during the festive period, but one thing that often gets left off the list is considering whether you need to temporarily alter the amount of contents cover you need through December.

Doing so will give you the peace of mind that, should anything go wrong, you know your cover will be up to scratch.

Some insurers may automatically increase your cover over this season but it will not be the case for every policy, so it’s worth checking. It’s also worth considering if you’ll need to contact your broker after Christmas, should you receive lots of lavish gifts.

Make sure you’re familiar with what is and is not covered by your policy. A specialist broker like Abode can guide you through this process.
